Ghost town
  • Architects:
Pavlo Zabotin, Viktor Kopieikin, Polina Moskalenko, Olena Kobets

Looking at the town of Craco and its surroundings everyone can see a Monument. A magical and inspiring place for those who seek a unique experience. The rocks, the walls, the breathtaking views, even the historical dust are like poetry. Nobody would attempt to change the Monument that was created by Quintus Horatius Flaccus. Following analogical justification, the purpose of the project is not to change the existing wonder, but to make it accessible, to uncover new areas, new views and new interpretations. The ruins of Craco present a one of a kind, wonderful Synergy between what's man-made and what nature and time achieved. The key vision is to extend that Synergy in order to study and admire the substantial beauty of that place. The way to achieve that is to fully integrate all new features.

The first advantage of the concept is the new path, which reveals the western part of that magnificent ghost town. The important purpose of the additional touristic areas is to be able to host more visitors, who can spread around the whole Town. Everyone who takes a walk among the walls and spirits of Craco can find an opportunity to access all of the places the town has been hiding for years.

The journey of each guest starts at the brand new Service Center. Even though just the purpose of the building is new. In order to preserve the integrity of the whole complex, the Service Center is embedded in the existing foundation, which shape is provided in the map from 1966. The roof of the Service Center is in addition the first of the viewing platforms that this project provides. Following the concept it is a perfect place for a cup of espresso and a moment of reflection.

Taking the western path every visitor gets intrigued by “the bubbles” standing on wooden platforms. Those are the Shelters for guests, who  decide to stay overnight among the historical walls and see them from another perspective, under the breathtaking starry sky of Craco.

For guests who require a little bit more comfort there are three Suites in the eastern part of Craco. Those wooden structures offer a spacious, private space with spectacular views from the inside and from the terraces situated on the rooftops.

There is one more extraordinary feature in the project, that needs to be mentioned. Not only the Service Center and the Suites contain spaces to enjoy the breathtaking views, this project provides additional lookout points that are situated: 1. on the rock to the east of the tower, 2. and 3. on the northern cliff. All those viewing platforms will definitely attract all those eager for that perfect picture of the unforgettable town of Craco.

The proposals mentioned above are carefully designed to achieve desired Synergy. All components presented in the project are selected in order to provide mobility and sustainability. The Paths, the Platforms, the Service Center and the Suites are made of the larch wood which could provide the local industry with additional occupation. Wooden structures are easy to assemble as well as reassemble and to move or use in a different form. The Shelters are made of recycled plastic. As a result they are light and easy to transport. During sunny days an additional protection in order to reflect the sunshine can be provided. The whole concept will create new motion in the ruins of the ghost town. The new Path is like an artery that gives new life to the part of Craco that fell asleep in the past. The Service Center and the Shelters embedded in the tissues of the town connect the visitors with its spirits. Guests can touch and smell the magic of the past centuries. All new and simple features do not disturb the existing beauty, they just make it brighter and more visible.
