The centuries-old history of the Ukrainian nation is a history of fighting for freedom: the formation of Kievan Rus, Zaporizhian Sich, the Ukrainian People’s Republic, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) fighting for independence during many years, the post-Soviet independent Ukraine, fight for justice during the “Orange” revolution, the contemporary revolution on “Maidan” for the sake honor and dignity. The analysis of frequency of revolutionary events shows that intervals between these surges are becoming shorter. Standing one’s ground is becoming a matter of duty for Ukrainian people now.
In our opinion, daily revolution of ideas is the next evolutionary stage of Ukrainian society.
Zaporizhian Sich is vivid example of Ukrainian people uniting together in their fight for independence. Over two hundred years Zaporizhian Sich was an autonomous cluster (an island in the middle of the river), a community of free people-warriors-cossaks. We believe that Zaporizhian Sich was the prototype for creating a different kind of community during the protests on Maidan in 2013-2014. "Maidan" is a cluster of free like-minded people. Until recently Kyiv was an example of hierarchical totalitarian space, a certain black cube where emerging white clusters of disagreement were considered to be something alien and threatening the system from within. “Maidan” and its gradual expansion (both territorial and conceptual) laid down the foundation for a different pattern of social interaction based on civil clusters (Grushevskogo street, Institutska street, Mykhaylivska square). Therefore, the concept suggests the following model:
Kyiv – tissue; unit of disagreement (discontent, tension) – cluster.
The increasing number of clusters within the structure of the tissue is a clear sign for the authorities showing the amount of tension in the society. This spatial and social model can be used in order to register emerging problems in the city and, as a result, to form a new kind of civil society. With the help of clusters, citizens will be able to report about the problems in the city: from local (public safety, maintenance and landscape) to national ones (dissatisfaction with retirement policy, integration issues, etc.). The suggested project demonstrates the principle of disseminating ideas with the view of creating a different model of the world, where cities are built with active participation of consumers. This is the way to enhance civic responsibility of each and every person. Critical approach to a different Model of the World makes it possible to find ways for new radical changes. The analysis of potential social models has led to conclusion that reform process in the society has a cyclic character. We believe that Kyiv is the main national platform for daily revolution of ideas.
